Eric Birnberg, LL.B. is an experienced entertainment lawyer with hands-on experience in film and television production and distribution, and broadcasting, providing services to an array of clients from Canadian television series hosts to international production and distribution companies, and broadcasters.

A corporate lawyer by trade, Eric spent eight years with Alliance Atlantis, Canada’s then-largest integrated filmed entertainment company, holding senior management positions including Sr. VP, Business & Legal Affairs for the Television Group, and General Counsel to the entire Alliance Atlantis organization. Earlier in his career, Eric was Legal Counsel at Canada’s preeminent pay television network, The Movie Network.

Eric is also a co-founder and partner of Behind the Scenes Services, the 14-year old Toronto-based company that both manages all business and legal affairs on several film, television and digital media projects annually, and handles specialized business administration services, for many small and large Canadian production houses.

Complementary to these activities, Eric regularly serves in producing and executive producing roles on film and television projects, both through his co-owned production company, High Park Entertainment, co-producer of the award-winning feature film thriller “Nightrunners” shot on Rusinga Island in rural Kenya (nominee for the prestigious Kenyan “Kalasha” award for Best Feature Film), and in an independent capacity on projects such as Donald Sutherland’s award-winning animated television movie “Pirate’s Passage” (winner of the Kidscreen award for Best “Tween” One-Off, Special or TV Movie) and Dave Thomas’ animated television series “Bob and Doug”.

Eric has also taken an entrepreneurial role as a founding partner in various entertainment-related businesses, including a Canadian cable broadcaster, a 360°digital media company, and a fitness and wellness brand.

Eric is a member of the Canadian Media Producers Association’s (CMPA) International Business & Production Financing Committee and its Copyright Committee, and as a CMPA representative, he sits on the boards as Vice-Chair of the Canadian Retransmission Collective (CRC), and as Chair of the Producers Audio-Visual Collective of Canada (PACC).

Eric is a frequent speaker at conferences for lawyers, producers and others, notoriously asked to speak about the “practical” realities of entertainment business matters!

Eric was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1988, following his graduation from the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario in 1986. He was also one of the first graduates of the Alliance Atlantis Banff Television Executive Program.
